JL Audio’s MX650 is the 6.5” coaxial marine speaker pair from their MX series line, which is geared towards customers prioritizing affordability, as opposed to the more expensive M series that’s geared towards top notch performance. Despite the MX series being lower tier, the same quality materials that are used to build the high end M650 are used to build the MX650. The differences between the two are the power handling, crossover network and tweeter dimensions.
The MX650 model features a 0.75” tweeter, and for the crossover it uses the natural roll-off of the mid-bass driver and a 2nd order highpass filter for the tweeter. It is important to note that, like the M650, the MX650 also has the tweeter polyswitch solid state protection, a very desirable feature. This is an electronic protection, similar to an automated fuse, that disconnects the tweeter when too much power is sensed and automatically connects it back when volume is reduced.
Power: 8/10 – The MX650 has a 60 watt nominal power rating, which is very good for a 6.5 inch marine speaker pair. It also has the same high sensitivity rating of 89.5d/W/m as it’s older brother M650, so you can expect pretty high output levels. While you can power it straight from the head unit’s output, it’s preferable if you can use separate amplifiers in the 75-100W range.
Aesthetics & Style: 4.5/5 – The entire MX series offers great stylistic diversity with two grille types and two colors to choose from. Both grille models maintain a simple and elegant design that’s also kind of futuristic. The width of the grille is only 6.55” so it won’t be very obtrusive. We also think these just look really cool.
Portability & Convenience: 4/5 – We said in our review of the higher end M650 that the installation was on the complicated side. Fortunately, installing the MX650 pair is significantly easier. Each unit has the standard 4 point mounting and it is easy to configure the connections between the amplifier’s output and the speaker. The tweeter is mounted on the grille so it does need a wire to connect it to the system. Overall it’s pretty straightforward. The only potential inconvenience might be that the depth of these speakers is on the larger size, which might be a bit problematic when trying to fit them into the cabinet. All the components and parts necessary to install these speakers are included.
Durability: 4.5/5 – JL Audio marine speakers always score high points in durability. The marine speakers are all manufactured in the USA, and the company is known for their rigorous quality control and top of the line testing equipment.
Warranty: 4/5 – JL Audio offers a 2 year warranty on all of their marine speakers, which is a little short considering other companies that offer a 5 year or lifetime warranty on their outdoor speaker products. But, two years is still pretty solid to at least protect yourself from defective units.
Price: 9/10 – For the specs they bring to the table, these speakers are an excellent deal at just under $200 currently on Amazon.
Bottom Line: 8.7/10
The MX650 combines great audio performance with reasonable cost, and it is a good choice for music lovers building a system on a budget. That coupled with a company that is second to none in quality control and durability testing for marine environments, you can’t really go wrong with these speakers. We’ll note that to take full advantage of their high quality, powerful sound it is best to use dedicated amplifiers.
