JBL is highly regarded as one of the top speaker producers in the world, and their commitment to quality extends to their lines of marine speakers. Their top selling marine speaker model is the MS6200, a 6.5 inch 2-way coaxial driver. A stylish design and JBL engineering make this model an excellent choice for boat speakers. The coaxial design removes the need of a separate tweeter unit and the associated installation complexity and provides better stereo image as sound comes from the same center point at all frequencies. In English – you’ll get a full and even sound with this competitively priced unit. Keep on reading for our full JBL MS6200 Review. You can learn more about our rating system here.
Power: 9/10 – Rated at 60W RMS, The MS6200 can handle most demands in terms of output. Despite having a lower RMS power rating than the top selling infinity 612M For a 6.5 inch marine speaker, this thing can get very loud. A sensitivity of 91db/2.83V/m puts this model in the middle range in terms of efficiency and while it can operate very well from any HU, dedicated amplifiers would really get the best out of these speakers.
Aesthetics & Style: 4.5/5 – The frame on the JBL MS6200 looks great while being practical and protective. Some might say it looks a little plain, but it will definitely blend in seamlessly to a white cabinet on a boat. More importantly, the flat grill is very protective of the woofer cone and tweeter. While the more popular Infinity 612M speaker is a great marine speaker as well, it’s one design flaw is that the cone is somewhat exposed and vulnerable.
Portability & Convenience: 4/5 – The MS6200 has standard mounting dimensions with a 5 1/16 inch cutout diameter and 2 ¾ inch mounting depth. It should fit in most standard boat cabinets. The units also weigh only 2.2 pounds each, so placing them will be very easy.
Durability: 4/5 – JBL’s high standard of engineering quality shows its value here with a UV and water resistant frame built in one piece, holding the speaker elements together. The MS6200 has a polypropylene cone, allowing the unit to withstand some of the worst weather conditions. There are many technological advancements in polypropylene cone manufacturing, most of them are discussed in publication and at AES (Audio Engineering Society) meetings. Stainless steel mounting elements and a sealed magnetic system makes the MS6200 very resistant to corrosion due to salt water.
Warranty: 3/5 – All JBL Marine speakers come with a 1 year warranty, which is unfortunately on the short side, but will at least protect you from defective units.
Price: 9/10 – The MS6200is currently heavily discounted on Amazon.com for well under $100, which is a fantastic deal for speakers with these specs & brand quality
Amazon Average User Rating: 4.6/5 – You can read the Amazon.com reviews here
Bottom Line: 8.5/10
These speakers are an excellent choice for your marine vessel, while being very competitively priced. JBL is an excellent brand, so you’ll know you’re getting a quality product. It’s not a surprise they boast an impressive average user rating on Amazon, and also have sat comfortably in the top five best selling marine speaker units on Amazon as well.
